More on HealthVault from Microsoft (Part I of II)

This month we're returning to our most popular report ever, that on Personal Health Records (PHR). The Executive Summary is here.

The full report is 111 pages and is available for sale; it includes 4 spreadsheets-- yes, market projections is one of them-- in digital Excel format on which the buyer can run "what if?" analyses.

Buy it from our eStore, or the order form is here, and email mattc [@] marketintellnow.com with questions or to talk to an analyst about the report.

PHR has been held back by ten not-small problems, and Microsoft begins to solve them. Imagine the further effect if Google and Intuit also jump in successfully alongside industry stalwart WebMD.

Here are the top 5 PHR problems-to-date, tune in tomorrow for the rest:

  1. Lack of Awareness: Is there a bigger online brand than Microsoft?

  2. Lack of Franchise: Your HealthVault login is your Microsoft Passport (Windows Live ID). They have about 200 million of them....

  3. Lack of Community: This is still a glaring hole ... most PHR platforms are mired in Web 1.0. We expect this to change soon, as players like DailyStrength strike bizdev deals with the big PHR players. After all, Steve Case's Revolution Health wisely snapped up CarePages, surely the other PHR players saw that (and are nervous).

  4. Lack of "Free": Very hard to charge for anything on the web. HealthVault will be free to the user, monetized with contextual ads ("vertical search")-- we are seeing why they bought Medstory.

  5. Lack of Connectivity: Look at this early list of HealthVault partners. Do the words "open source platform" resonate?

"Today’s event highlighted the broad range of more than 40 applications and devices available on the HealthVault platform now or in the future from the following organizations: ActiveHealth Management; Allscripts; American Diabetes Association; American Heart Association and American Stroke Association; American Lung Association; Aperion Companies; CapMed, a division of Bio-Imaging Technologies Inc.; Claricode; Diabetes Prevention Source (DPS); Diet.com; Eclipsys Corp.; HealthCentral Network Inc.; HealthMedia Inc.; Healthphone Solutions Ltd.; Healthways; Healthy Circles LLC; Home Diagnostics Inc.; iMedica Corp.; Kryptiq Corp.; LifeScan Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company; LiveHealthier; Matria Healthcare Inc.; Medem Inc.; MedHelp; Medical Informatics Engineering (MIE); Medifast Inc.; MEDSEEK; Medstar Health; Microlife USA Inc.; NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital; NexCura, a Thomson Healthcare Business; NextGen Healthcare Information Systems Inc.; NoMoreClipboard.com; OMRON Healthcare Inc.; Peaksware LLC; Physicians Wellness Network; Podfitness; Polar; PureWellness; Sound Health Solutions Inc.; StayWell, a MediMedia company; Texas Instruments Inc.; US Wellness Inc.; Vital Data Technology; Whole Health Management; and WorldDoc Inc."
