News/Search Decelerating, Community Accelerating:
Oligopoly Racing to Build-Partner-Buy

If you read our blog you know COMMUNITY is surging. You also know that while sick folks and their loved ones like connecting with other similarly sick folks and their loved ones, this is proving hard to ad-monetize (all of Social Networking is facing this conundrum).

But COMMUNITY is also about connecting the sick/their loved ones to ... experts.

Witness, from MedHelp this week:

In keeping with our mission, it is a great honor for us to announce our newest partnership with Johns Hopkins Medicine. Currently Johns Hopkins holds the distinction of being named the #1 Hospital in America in U.S.News & World Report's Honor Roll of "America's Best Hospitals" for the 17th Consecutive Year.

To launch our new partnership, doctors from Johns Hopkins will be answering your questions in the newly created Brain Tumors and Trigeminal Neuralgia Forums, the first of what we hope will be many new forums during the coming months.

The Oligopoly (AOL, Google, Microsoft, WebMD & Yahoo!) will build/partner/buy their way into COMMUNITY for two reasons:
  1. They will be able to better monetize the social networking aspect, as an adjunct to their News/Search ad sales; and

  2. They want to be part of lashing patients to doctors and hospitals, especially as care increasingly goes from face-to-face ... to virtual.

We cover all this in-depth in our report on: News/Search/Community....
